Happy happy birthday to our sweet, dear, wonderful Marty Smith!
Marty wears a thousand hats around here and we are so thankful for all she does to keep us in order! She’s our business manager + showroom merchandiser + event planner + so many other things and SummerHouse absolutely could not run without her!
To celebrate, we had a few Gigi’s cupcakes from our Township neighbor!

Last year, one of Lisa’s clients decided he wanted to move out of his urban apartment in downtown Jackson and move into Eastbrooke in North Jackson for a little change of scenery. Having worked on many projects with this customer before, Lisa was delighted to be asked to help. His eclectic sense of style and fun personality make him a joy to work with! In the kitchen, we kept some of the existing appliances, and the original cabinet fronts. Pretty much everything else is new: New tile floors, new countertops and back splash, new light fixtures, new sinks, and new grasscloth on the walls. The furniture in the area was furniture Lisa picked for the customer’s previous home.

The master bedroom turned out great! It is such a cozy place for lounging and watching TV. The wall color, carpet, drapery, and chaise lounge are new. Everything else was from the master bedroom in a previous home, that Lisa had picked out years ago.

The master bathroom area underwent one of the most dramatic changes in the renovation. The tiered garden tub was taken out and replaced with a beautiful solid white soaking tub. The shower was also completely re-worked. The vanity area was made into the client’s ideal space for getting dressed and for packing to travel. The closet was completely re-designed to house every bit of the client’s wardrobe, including his steamer! All surfaces and fixtures are new, as well as the ottoman. The fabulous existing collection of art is what really completed this space.

This dining room turned out to be the perfect spot to host an intimate dinner for close friends. The only thing that stayed the same in this room is the mirrored wall. Lisa and the client both thought it would be a great way to pay homage to the original 80′s style of the condo. The custom strie wall finish was done by Virginia Weathersby, our favorite faux painter! The dining chairs and table base were from a previous home and were perfect for this space. And the sheer curtains, with a small metallic thread woven through the fabric, really add a nice ambiance when drawn.

Look at this transformation! After moving some walls around, tearing out the bookcases, re-doing the mantle and getting all new furniture, this place looks brand new and completely different! The beautiful Julie Neil fixture in the living area and the custom made foyer fixture light the space beautifully.

With the custom vanity and custom wall treatment, the powder room off of the Music Room turned out to be a room like no other.

The Music Room is one of the coziest spaces in the condo. With the chocolate walls and chocolate drapery, how could this space not feel warm? Most of the furniture in here is furniture Lisa picked out for the client in years past. The newly re-worked staircase, which used to only open into the foyer, now opens into this space as well. The iron railing was custom made to the client’s specifications. The wall finish, that also continues into the foyer, was a custom wall treatment by Virginia Weathersby.

With a new light fixture, new carpet, new side tables and new lamps, this room turned from boring to bold! The bedding was from a previous home, but was so easy to work with because of all the color. The blue lamps were custom made out of vases the client saw in SummerHouse and fell in love with.

What a difference a new paint job, new flooring and new countertops can make! We were so happy with the final result here.

As our first feature in the Around Jackson series, we would like to highlight View Gallery, owned by Phyllis Geary. View is located in Ridgeland at the Township (just a few doors down from us!) and is the showplace of many local and regional artists’ work. Paul Edelstein, Sheila Gourlay, Liz Chadwick Nichols, Sophia, Vicki Overstreet and Carol Cox Peaster are just a few of the talented people who show their art at View.

A quick little chat with Phyllis:
Laurel: So why did you open your gallery?
Phyllis: For a couple of reasons. Ever since I incorporated original art into my design work, my passion has grown for visual art. It transformed my design work and made me realize how essential it is when incorporated into ones home decor. Also, owning a small business has enabled me to be more flexible with my home life.
Laurel: How do you decide what artists to carry?
Phyllis: As an interior designer, I am drawn to work that has a beautiful balance of color. But I have realized that a mix of styles and techniques makes for a better display. Therefore, I look for quality and color, texture and application. Work that is edgy is not necessarily always good, and work that has beautiful colors is not always quality work either. I look for unique qualities that sets the artist’s work apart.
Laurel: Cool, so what are you doing this weekend?!
Phyllis: I will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to see some close friends and family, and do exchanges with artists from there whose work I carry.
