Firefly Cottage Feature in Social South

Have you seen the latest issue of Social South?

They did a feature on Firefly Cottage at Chestnut Hill, the Designer Showhouse that Lisa led the design on from the ground up! Lisa assembled a team of the best designers in Jackson, who each took a room to put their own cottagey spin on. The house ended up being breath-taking! You can read all about it in this story! (See page 26)

Interview with Susan Hable Smith

After meeting the oh-so-lovely Susan Hable Smith at High Point Market this past fall and falling even deeper in love with her handiwork, we knew we wanted to do a blog post about her so all of you (ourselves included!) can get more familiar with this extraordinary woman!

Susan Hable Smith

Susan Hable Smith

Here’s some quick info about Susan Hable Smith: She was born in Texas, has worked in the design field on both the east and west coasts, and now resides in Georgia. She has a serious passion for art, which can be seen both on fabrics (Check out the website for Hable Construction) and in pieces of wall art (some of which can be seen here.) SummerHouse actually used some Susan Hable Smith wall art in our Mistletoe Marketplace bay back in November, which you may remember!

With the recent collaboration between Susan Hable Smith and Hickory Chair, our fascination with her is at an all time high!

You may remember seeing our instagram post of the day the Hable for Hickory Chair fabrics came in! We were so excited!

She was kind enough to answer some questions (asked by various members of our design staff) in a little interview!
Let’s get going, shall we?

1. Were you a designer first or an artist?

I suppose I was recognized for being a designer first. I havent really put myself out into the world as an artist so this is fairly new for me–to be seen this way!

2. How did you get the idea to put your art into textiles?

You know, I had a lot of sales experience because when I was first living in New York City, those were the only jobs that I could find. I then moved to California doing the same for a jewelry artist. I always made sure that I worked in unconventional offices and that I was around people making things. I actually started my company after working for someone and realizing that I could be doing this on my own and having more fun! Most of my design decisions, or career ones too, have come unexpectedly. Its not that I am waiting around for things to happen… I have had dreams of painting and then woken up to the reality of WHY AM I NOT PAINTING on my fabrics? Crazy dreams kind of light the way… I thought about putting my art into textiles because I knew how to sell something and so I thought that we should make something to put my art on. It was more tangible than just being a painter and not knowing that world. I could make the art, we could then make the object and together with my sister being a great salesperson, we could go to market and sell it! That was our background so it made the most sense.

3. What is your personal interior design style?

Well, I dont really have a style per se. I have many objects that make each room and they are based on color. My home is fun and eccentric but spare at the same time. Since moving to Georgia 3 years ago from New York City, we had few great furniture pieces. We had been collecting art and finding places in our tiny apartment to hang each one so our walls are now covered, and the furniture has filled in a bit with hand picked items found one at a time. I do love wallpaper and made sure that I used it anywhere that I could!

4. What made you decide to partner with Hickory Chair?

Our partnership with Hickory Chair was a funny set of circumstances that would not have happened had I not moved to Athens! My pediatrician turned out to be the son-in-law to Jay Reardon, the president of Hickory Chair. A designer friend who sells Hickory in town told me how much she wished our fabrics were in the line and kept suggesting for me to meet the sales rep. So, one day, I picked up the phone and made a call to see what this was all about. Fortunately, at the time, the creative director Ron Fiore knew of Hable Construction and had even bought our sheets at one point! We all came together and met and realized that we all could benefit from a partnership together. We have many of the same beliefs and manufacturing in the United States is one of them! It was a match!

5. With so many roots to the deep south, if you had to choose one aspect of the region that inspires you most, what would you say that is?

Oh this is such a tricky question mostly because of my extensive past with the south. My sister went to Ole Miss. I went to the University of Alabama. We are from a town in Texas called Corsicana. So, I think it would have to be the eccentricities of the south and very honest core of most of the people that I know. There is a sparkle in people’s eyes that I havent seen anywhere else… The creativity and support is so inspiring. There are people, especially in Athens, who are up for anything or meeting anyone. Curious, in the most fabulous way, also inspires me!

Thank you so much, Susan!

A Comfortable and Elegant Before + After

We’ve got another fabulous Before + After for you guys today! Designer Elizabeth Gullett has successfully taken a room with great bones from lackluster to lust-worthy! Even though the finished product is fairly tonal, Elizabeth’s combination of textures makes this room amazingly interesting!

But before you can see this beautiful room, take a look at the BEFORE photos:

See? Pretty room, just in need of some help! And that’s where Elizabeth comes in…

The homeowner’s style is elegant, rustic, and classic. This is her formal living room so she wanted to put a little more elegance into this room, all while maintaining warm approachability. She wanted people to think, “Oh what a beautiful room,” but not be scared to sit in it.

“We mixed an elegant velvet on the sofa with a seagrass rug. The mirrored coffee table also adds another dressy element,” says Elizabeth.

But before any sample pulling began, Elizabeth found this gorgeous Carol Sneed painting, above the mantle, to use as her jumping off point. Elizabeth says, “We pulled the whole room together around this painting!”

Design by Elizabeth Gullett at SummerHouse | Ridgeland, MSElizabeth wanted everything in this room to be classic, without anything trendy, so this room would be beautiful for years and years. She and the homeowner, however, did include some ikat pillows on the sofa since that’s one thing that can easily be switched out (should ikat  go out of style anytime soon!)

Let’s take a quick inventory of textures in this space:
Linen, silk, velvet, wood, glass, mirror, and seagrass. “Even though the colors are all pretty neutral, this room is super interesting because of all the texture,” Elizabeth says about this great, comfortable, elegant formal living room.

JOB WELL DONE!

One Really Big Mirror

Designer Todd Prince just finished up part of a project that we are all going crazy over! This HUGE, custom designed mirror is just what this big, beautiful dining room needed!

Designer Todd Prince for SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

About the space:
Todd says the solid masonry wall in this dining room needed something reflective to open up the space. His first thought was to do a really, REALLY big mirror.

About the mirror:
This bad boy is ELEVEN feet high by NINE feet wide! That’s 99 square feet of mirror! Brown’s Fine Art and Framing in Jackson, who made this custom masterpiece, had to rent a space to construct it because it was bigger than what they had the space to make in their shop!

The frame was custom made and custom finished by hand. The frame finish was originally a solid silver, but Allison at Brown’s made it look a little more aged.

Not only did Allison hand finish the frame, but also the rosettes used at the corner of every 20″ x 20″ piece of mirror used to create the full reflective surface.

“BIG shout out Allison Simmons at Brown. She did a fantastic job,” Todd says.

Here are a couple more photos of this beautiful home, holiday ready, for your viewing pleasure!

Texture + Tone

Lisa and Elish have a couple of room designs underway that are beautiful displays of texture and tone! All of the creams in one of the rooms come together beautifully to create a soft and very interesting palette. All of the different blues in the other room blend beautifully because of the different textures and patterns.

Stay tuned for pictures of these rooms later on as they start coming together!

Meet Tammy Savell!

Meet Tammy Savell!

We have yet another semi-new SummerHouse face to introduce you to!

Meet Tammy Savell. You might’ve run into Tammy over the past couple of months unpacking new accessories in the receiving room or sorting through lots of fun paper work!

1. What is your SummerHouse position title?

Marty says stock/receiving/girl Friday! I unbox lamps, bedding, accessories, etc, that come in to the store & price it all & then put it up or help Marty put it out on the showroom floor.

2. Where are you from?

I grew up in Clinton, MS & moved to Madison about 9 years ago.

3. What’s your favorite thing about your job at SummerHouse?

I love to see the unique & gorgeous items as they come in. There is so much I want to take home with me!

This time of year, I love to watch any Christmas movie!

5. What’s your favorite way to spend a lazy Saturday morning?

I enjoy spending time with my husband & two sons on the weekends. Family time is the best!

Thank you Tammy! And thanks for all your hard work. There’s no telling what the receiving/presentation room would look like without you!
