Party Tips from House Beautiful

Party Tips from House Beautiful

As we were perusing the new House Beautiful (which is SUCH a good issue) we came across these party tips.  With the holidays (a.k.a. parties galore) right around the corner, we thought these “Do’s and Don’ts” were just too good not to share!  Here are a few of our favorites!

Go grab the November issue of House Beautiful to see all 101 tips!

99.  Don’t be afraid to set up a dinner table in an unconventional or not-the-usual spot for a more interesting dinner or lunch—in the library among the books, out on a porch.  -Gil Schafer, Architect/Designer

51. Have beverages visible from the moment guests step in the door.  -Matt and Ted Lee, Chefs/Cookbook Authors

35.  Seat guests next to someone they know and someone they’d enjoy meeting.  -Alex Papachristidis, Designer

85.  You can never have too many white plates, platters, and bowls.  -Cheryl Katz, Designer

57. Don’t be afraid to use your finest china, silverware, and crystal pieces outdoors.  It can make a casual event a bit more special.  -Ty Burks, Designer

8.  Don’t come to a party empty-handed.  -Jayne Michaels, Designer

86.  Serve an amazing dessert.  Even the worst main course will be forgotten if it’s followed by a spectacular dessert.  Extra points for making it yourself.  -Michael Devine, Shop Owner/Textile Designer

22.  Never, never, never run out of ice.  -Bryan Batt, Actor/Shop Owner

94.  Don’t move people around too much.  If you move people off the dining table it can be sort of a cue to leave and can break up the conversations.  -Michael S. Smith, Designer

49.  No colored candles! Only ivory and white.  -Jan Showers, Designer

1.  Create a music playlist that’s ready to begin as soon as the doorbell rings and doesn’t end until the last guest departs.  -Colin Cowie, Event Planner

55.  Never use paper napkins. -Judi Roman, Shop owner

28.  You should always have a cold bottle of bubbly stashed in your refrigerator in case friends drop by, and a bottle of something sparkly for nondrinkers.  -Christopher Hirsheimer, Co-founder, Canal House Cooking

97.  Don’t set the table with a single pattern of china or silver, as though you just unearthed your bridal registry.  Mix it up, get creative.  -Eddie Ross, eddieross.com

68.  Stick your candles in the freezer for a couple of days prior to using them.  The freezing will eliminate most of the messy dripped wax all over your furniture.  -David Stark, Furniture/Textile Designer

9.  Don’t try a new recipe at a party.  -Tricia Foley, Designer/Author

SummerHouse Featured in Furniture Today

SummerHouse Featured in Furniture Today

Do you guys remember how excited we were about our BIG REVEAL and the 5-day store closing leading up to it? Well, we got national recognition for it! Furniture Today, the furniture industry’s leading business newspaper, did a whole story on it!  If you don’t remember anything about THE BIG REVEAL, here is a little recap:  We closed our doors Thursday, September 2 and did not re-open until Tuesday, September 7.  During that time, we gave the store a face lift!  We had built in shelves put in the back to house our pillows and bedding.  We had Virginia Weathersby do a stencil on the wall behind the front desk.  We had the walls repainted.  We put a new finish on our concrete floors.  We cleaned the upstairs like it has never been cleaned before.  We re-organized the ENTIRE resource library.  We got new sconces and skirt to go at the front desk. We brought 52 new pieces of furniture over from the warehouse.  And….. That might be about it! So, as you can see, we were BUSY during those days! THE BIG REVEAL was the party we held the week after our re-opening where we invited friends and family to come celebrate our new look with us.  We had a blast!

We owe a huge thanks to Gary Evans, the sweet man who wrote the article.  Thanks to him for taking a genuine interest in our store.  Throughout his information gathering process, we grew to love Gary! :)   We also owe a thank you to Karen Maxim, our amazing business consultant, for getting Gary to notice us! It was because of her hard work that he even gave us the time of day!

In addition to being noticed because of THE BIG REVEAL, Gary also touched on the unique marketing and business practices we implement here at SummerHouse!  We have gotten really into the Facebook and Twitter thing (as well as blogging!) to reach out to a whole new audience.  Social media is a nice outlet for us to show our fun side! We love interacting with all of our fabulous customers, friends, and admirers!

“[Maxim] said that Palmer is fun and full of energy, and “has the talent and the passion.  A lot of businesses fail because the owner doesn’t have the passion.  When she goes on that floor, that’s something she has.  You can’t bottle that up.”  -Gary Evans, Furniture Today

The unique business practice that Lisa was noted for is her purchasing.  Unlike most furniture stores, we sell directly off of our showroom floor, which really keeps Marty (our merchandiser) on her toes!  She has to fill holes pretty much on a daily basis in order to keep the showroom looking full.  Once we sell something off the floor, we have our warehouse guys bring over something to go in place of whatever sold.  Then we place orders for new things! It is a pretty cool system that works really well for us.  It is a lot of work, but Lisa says it is worth it! She says, “Selling off the floor really forces me to stay up to date on what’s current, which I love.  I want to keep my store interesting, so the opportunity to order new furniture items on a regular basis helps keep the showroom fresh.  My designers love when we bring new furniture over; It keeps them excited about the product they get to show and work with.”

Color Trends for 2011

Color Trends for 2011

We recently came across a post on the Merida Meridian blog that really caught our eye.  After some intense research, they have predicted the ready-to-wear and interiors colors for the coming year.  We like what they’ve put together.  Take a look.  What do you think?  They were dead on for 2010, so let’s see how they do for 2011!

"Midsummer Night’s Dream is a theatrical expression of color and emotion. It has a dramatic combination of Boudreaux reds mixed with rich plum and olive greens. It’s as if the colors were pulled from a winery. The textures consist of luxurious surfaces such as velvets, brocades and taffeta and are used together in the same composition to create an over the top display."

"Here we are starting to see mid range neutral tones warm up rooms of harsh black and white. It’s a softening of the usual heavy contrast by using ivory as a base color and white as an accent. Oak, tan and ivory are paired with deep black giving depth to the space they encompass."

"Making a fierce, evocative statement, Roaring Red stands bold and confidently with a nod to an Asian influence. Glossy lipstick tones of red paired with heavy contrasts of black and white allow for the vibrant color to pop. You’ll also start seeing these reds paired with quieter tones of navy and camel to soften the palette and highlight silhouettes."

"Mysterious and intriguing, the unusual combination of indigos, icy grays and camel tones define our Mystic Blue category. The cool blues are warmed up by the use of the rich browns and camels to create a deep, sophisticated palette."

"Forrest is rugged and rustic with it’s down to earth color combination. Olive oil and army greens ranging from light lime to deep avocado are paired with each other in the same palette. Each green is typically combined with a deep chocolate, cream or camel. Rich textures of fleece, fur and leathers lend themselves well to the theme."

"One of our favorite combinations revealing a new twist on a retro feel! For us, this palette reflects the colors that glow at the first ray of light when the sun hits the earth each morning. The washed out acidic tones of celery greens, chartreuse, corals, blush and camels are refreshing and new. The hazy atmosphere tries to wash out the saturated colors, but they still are illuminated."

"Black Ice is unexpected and refreshing, going against traditional fashion taboos of combining deep blue with black. Deep, dark, rich tones of cobalt, navy and midnight black reveal themselves with highlights of icy white and silver."

"Fresh, clean and without any color at all, this trend uses all shades of white to define it’s palette. This trend reminds us of priming a canvas with gesso before painting however, once it’s been primed you decide the picture is complete! No need for frills or explosions of color, just a calm, simple serene atmosphere is the goal to express a very strong, controlled environment."

Pumpkin Cupcakes

Pumpkin Cupcakes

As we were perusing the House Beautiful website, we came across this Barefoot Contessa pumpkin cupcake recipe that sounded too good not to share!  Fall is here in full force, so it is time to start cooking fall goodies!  These would be so good as an option for Thanksgiving dinner dessert…. Yum!

Pumpkin Cupcake (picture from housebeautiful.com)

Pumpkin Cupcakes with Maple Frosting

Makes 10 cupcakes

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin purée (8 ounces), not pie filling
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • Maple Frosting (recipe follows)
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped Heath bars, for serving (2 1.4-ounce bars)

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Brush or spray the top of 10 muffin tins with vegetable oil and line them with 10 paper liners.

2. Into a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. In a larger bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin purée, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Add the flour mixture and stir until combined.

3. Divide the batter among the prepared tins (I use a level 2 1/4-inch ice cream scoop) and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Set aside to cool completely.

4. Spread the cupcakes with the Maple Frosting and sprinkle with the chopped toffee bits.

Maple Frosting

  •  6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1/4 teaspoon Boyajian Natural Maple Flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the cream cheese and butter on low speed until smooth. Stir in the maple flavoring and vanilla extract. With the mixer still on low, slowly add the confectioners’ sugar and mix until smooth.

Designer Spotlight: Meagan Burks

Designer Spotlight: Meagan Burks

Meagan Burks

Meagan Burks, one of our amazing designers, is faced with design challenges on a regular basis (as most designers are!)  Where does she turn when she needs inspiration? Meagan has several designers, including Kelly Wearstler, Suzanne Kasler and Bobby McAlpine, whose styles really inspire her.  All of them have books that help refresh Meagan’s sometimes depleated creativity.

“First and foremost, Bobby McAlpine is an architect; and his new book, “The Home Within Us” is my favorite new architectural design book.  I have been an admirer of his architecture and interiors long before I knew he designed furniture.  The upholstery collection he designed for Lee Industries, one of our manufacturers, perfectly showcases his use of gracefully sculptural lines that are as timeless as they are unique.”

In contrast to Bobby McAlpine, Meagan also finds inspiration from Kelly Wearstler.  Kelly Wearstler’s HUE is a reminder of how to properly incorporate daring color into interior design.  As The New Yorker so eloquently put it, Kelly is “the presiding grande dame of West Coast interior design.”

“You can always tell it’s a Kelly Wearstler room.  Her mix of pattern, color, and texture is so bold, but it always works.  What shows through in her interiors shows through in her textile designs.”

Somewhere between the earthy, natural Bobby McAlpine and the bright, bold Kelly Wearstler falls Suzanne Kasler.  Her versatility is endless.

“Suzanne Kasler is known for her classically inspired rooms, soothing palettes, and casual elegance.  Her lighting fixtures bring Southern charm, European sensibility, and a respect for architectural details to her interiors.  Her work is polished and refined, yet casual, relaxed and effortless”

Suzanne describes her own style as “a fresh mix of continental flavor and classic style, emphasizing light, scale, and architectural elements of space, creating collected interiors.”   Her book, Inspired Interiors, beautifully showcases the mix that Suzanne is known for.
