A Visit with Virginia Weathersby

A Visit with Virginia Weathersby

Virginia Weathersby

Lisa:   Virginia, darling…You and I have been working together for… how many years?

Virginia:   Well, let’s see, it’s about… Ten or eleven?

Lisa:   We did that corporate condo in Eastbrooke. That was one of the first jobs we worked on.  That would have been at least ten years ago.

Virginia:   Yeah, I’d say ’99.  Maybe ’98, but I think ‘99

Lisa:   Of course back then, and probably for years after that, everybody was doing much heavier finishes.

Virginia:   Yeah, more textured finishes.  Very, very old world-ish. More things like that.  Remember we did the stone blocks going up the staircase and I even glazed over that torn paper wallcovering that was already in there.  Then I made that white column look like old wood.

Lisa:   That’s right.  On the bar, she had that map of Italy, and you made it look like the map was sort of being uncovered.  That was really cool.  When we started out working together, we did a lot of glazes, although I was never into very heavy finishes at all.  How many glazed walls do you think you have done?

This design on the island really livened up this kitchen

Virginia:   A gazillion! That customer you had, we did that whole room with glaze.  We did that whole big, humongous room!  All the way up the staircase and everything.  My sister was petrified; she was praying the whole time I was up there because we had balanced ladders on top of paint cans… I will always remember that job.

Lisa:   Well now that the heavier finishes are behind us, at least for now, what do you see?   I think you see how technology is really playing into what you do.  Technology today… it’s almost like the Jetson’s or something in fabrics and faux leather. And I love the way you’re doing your laser… well, not laser, but photography…  Incorporating that…

Virginia:   Right, right.  There is just so much out there, it’s like every single day is a whole new challenge and a whole new way of looking at things and doing things.  Especially with the fabrics.  And hopefully we’ll be cutting our own patterns and everything else. So anybody that comes to me, if they have an idea or they’ve seen something, we can actually translate that and turn it into some kind of a wall finish or a fabric finish easily. So that is huge for us.

Lisa:   One thing that you do, and I have been doing a good bit of for years, because I always love details and having things so custom, is stenciling on fabric, stenciling on a pillow, on a wall, on the back of a chair, just making it so one of a kind and custom.  And I think you really enjoy that.

“That was a whole new experience and that is what I love about my job.  Nobody ever wants the same thing, so you always have to be up on what’s new.”

Virginia:   Oh yeah, I love it, I absolutely love it! The big wall stencil that we just recently did, that was the first negative stencil I’ve ever done. In fact, I didn’t even know they existed. We had it custom made and worked negatively on the wall. That was a whole new experience and that is what I love about my job.  Nobody ever wants the same thing, so you always have to be up on what’s new.  That’s why I love coming in SummerHouse.  I could just walk around for days going through all your wallpaper books and just seeing everything that is the latest and newest.  I love it!

The matte bronze finish on these cabinets is so beautiful!

Lisa:   You always tell me that when you look at my resource library it gives you inspiration, but of course I think a lot of people get inspired by what you do.  Sometimes a wall finish, or looking at some of your samples…  Just going into your studio and looking at all your samples on the wall, or your wood finishes… those will inspire me for a look.  Sometimes I’ll start with a wall finish or start with a wood finish.

Virginia:   And that is why we work together as well as we do, because you might have an idea, but it’s not something you and your customer can both like yet.  So by seeing something else and saying “what if we take this finish here and put it over there on that, or we change that to this color…” You have all these fabulous ideas, and all I have to do is try to translate. I’m just busy trying to make it all work!  Because I know the mechanics of how it all works, and I try to take what you see in your mind and make it happen over here on a finish.

Virgnina's first negative stencil was GORGEOUS! Custom designed by Lisa Palmer for the Lee Residence

Lisa:   I may have an idea about something but I don’t know actually how to get it done. So that’s why, as a designer, I like working with someone that has your experience, and your knowledge of materials and paint, and what it can actually do…. that’s how you know how to translate, which is cool.

Virginia:   The thing that makes it great is that you don’t know. So you have no parameters. So you say “what if we do this and this and this” which are usually things I’ve never thought of.

Lisa:   That may be stretching you!

Virginia:   Yeah, it does.  It makes me think, “Well, how can I do that? How can I accomplish that?”  So I love that part.  That actually happened to me today.  We have this, and we want to make it this, so how do we get there?  It’s always a challenge!  If you had told me 20 years ago that this is what I’d be doing, I probably would’ve told you that you’re out of your mind.

Lisa:   Did you start off thinking you were going to do wall finishes?

Virginia:   Well, I’m not sure exactly how it happened.  I went to school for design, I did that, then I stopped doing that, got married and did all those things that you do,  so I was on a break for years.  Then when it got time to go back to work, I had seen other peoples work and it interested me.  I went to the Manship house in college and I thought, “how did they make that marble look? How did they make that wood grain look?”  That stuck in my head.  I’ve always been more of a hands-on worker.  I am not comfortable in high heels, I am not comfortable in clothes that are super tight.  I like carrying around a ladder, you know. I’m much more hands on and really just love doing the work!

The stencil at the bottom of this drapery is also at the top on a smaller scale. Custom designed by Lisa Palmer for Strange Residence

Lisa:   Well I think what you’ve brought to our area, you know, is pretty remarkable.  I think you’re just one of the best. EVER.  So do you ever have people say that they are tired of this? What you do? Is it kind of going out of style?

Virginia:   No, no!  It can’t!  It never will! Its been around for ten THOUSAND years. People were doing this in Egypt on cave walls.  Its been going on it Italy forever, a gazillion years ago.  Does it change? Yeah, it changes all the time.

Lisa:   The modern finishes you are doing now are pretty remarkable.

Virginia:   Oh, I love it.  I love the sleekness of it. I love the patterns.  I was so glad to hear wallpapers were coming back because it made me get up and work that much harder.  I will not be defeated by wallpaper! I just love it!

Meet the SummerHouse Girls

Meet the SummerHouse Girls

You know all about Lisa Palmer from reading our About section, but have you ever wanted to know a little bit more about the rest of the girls at SummerHouse?  If so, it is your lucky day!  Here is a quick introduction to all the bright, smiling faces that Lisa gets to work with every day!

Marty Smith

Meet Marty.  She is our business manager (or, as she calls herself, “the friendly bean counter”) and keeps us organized behind the scenes!  The girl is mean on a 10 key, and can place orders and pay bills like nobody’s business.  She also is in charge of our showroom merchandising and does an excellent job!  With new merchandise coming in every day, Marty stays extremely busy keeping our floor updated.  Visit us often, because the floor does change literally almost every day!  Thank you, Marty, for keeping this place looking as beautiful as it does!  Marty loves Ole Miss football and making her top secret salsa (to make all of us jealous that we don’t have the recipe.)

KC Cabell

Meet KC.  She is our happy-go-lucky receptionist!  She is probably most famous for the way she answers the phone:  “Thanks for calling SummerHouse, this is Kaaaaaay Ceeeeeee.”  There is no denying it—she is a Mississippi girl! We have even had a rep tell us that he will call the store just to hear KC answer the phone, and hang up!  Because she is married to a chef, she is always sharing some amazing food tips with all of us.  Where would we be without her?!  KC enjoys watering flowers and a good glass of sweet tea.

Katie Phillips

Meet Katie.  Katie is the most amazing design assistant anyone could ever ask for!  She helps the designers and the girls in the business office with whatever they need.  She also checks in all of our new samples and keeps the resource library in perfect order!  The girl has a job description that goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, and still this newlywed seems to keep it all together without ever getting frazzled!  On top of all this, she is a really talented designer.  If she is asked to find a fabric to put on this chair in that room, she does it with ease.  Katie enjoys laughing at funny things and trying to talk her husband into moving.

Laurel Donahoo

Meet Laurel.  Laurel  is technically Lisa’s assistant, but helps out pretty much wherever she is needed!  This girl can do wonders with a tape measure and is an expert when it comes to writing purchase orders.  With her above average height, she is good to have around when placing accessories in high places or hanging pictures.  Laurel and Katie, who is almost just as tall, make a good team whenever the short people around here need something gotten off of the top shelf! Laurel enjoys Mexican food and keeping it real.

Meagan Burks

Meet Meagan.  She is the newest designer to join the team at SummerHouse and is making a name for herself quite quickly!  She has had experience in all sorts of design, ranging from hospitality renovations to corporate offices to private residences.  She believes that “interior design and architecture are a means of representation, like a photograph, film, or drawing; and each project is its own unique creation based upon cultural, social, and physical conditions.”   Meagan is very creative and really enjoys a good challenge, when it comes to design.  Meagan loves road tripping to Florida and a good glass of red.

Betsy Pevey

Meet Betsy.  She joined the SummerHouse team in the fall of 2008 and has loved every minute of her time here! She comes from years of residential design experience.  In her personal design philosophy, her number one rule is to stay away from trends.  “Trends are so short lived and a waste of money.  If you go with high quality styles, textures and colors that are classic, they will last a lifetime.  If you want to add something trendy, try adding pillows or accessories.  Those are easier to change out after a few years.”  Betsy loves sports and prissing around the store!

Beth Black

Meet Beth.  Beth is our part time designer here and does a great job!  She has experience in commercial, kitchen and bath, and residential design.  She is so gifted and can pull a room together seemingly effortlessly.  “Some clients lay everything out for you and others take a little more detective work.”  When asked where she draws inspiration, Beth says, “I gain inspiration from many different things.  I love to dissect a great design magazine and I can literally spend hours on a design blog, but I think I gain most of my inspiration from the clients themselves.  I like to find one thing they love, whether it be a piece of art or a fabric or a particular style of chair and build on that.”  Beth loves spending time with her family and shopping for super cute clothes!

Melanie McGee

Meet Melanie.  Melanie came aboard in the fall of 2008 and is right at home at SummerHouse.  She has years of experience working not only in interior design, but in faux finishing.  “Design has been a mainstay in my life, even as a young child.  I cannot imagine a world without color, shape or texture.  It is so wonderful to work with the passion that I have for design every day.” Unearthing exactly what it is a client needs is a challenge Melanie always meets well.  “My clients’ needs are of utmost importance… Their lifestyle… How they live and how they entertain. Knowing all of that is very important when determining what can go in their homes!”  Melanie enjoys cooking and giving her dog, Olga, lots of love.

Before and After: Eastbrooke Condo

Before and After: Eastbrooke Condo

Last year, one of Lisa’s clients decided he wanted to move out of his urban apartment in downtown Jackson and move into Eastbrooke in North Jackson for a little change of scenery.  Having worked on many projects with this customer before, Lisa was delighted to be asked to help.  His eclectic sense of style and fun personality make him a joy to work with!  Check out the MAJOR transformation from before to after…

Kitchen BEFORE

Kitchen AFTER

In the kitchen, we kept some of the existing appliances, and the original cabinet fronts.  Pretty much everything else is new:  New tile floors, new countertops and back splash, new light fixtures, new sinks, and new grasscloth on the walls.  The furniture in the area was furniture Lisa picked for the customer’s previous home.

Master Bedroom BEFORE

Master Bedroom AFTER

The master bedroom turned out great!  It is such a cozy place for lounging and watching TV.  The wall color, carpet, drapery, and chaise lounge are new.  Everything else was from the master bedroom in a previous home, that Lisa had picked out years ago.

Master Vanity BEFORE

Master Vanity AFTER

Master Bath BEFORE

Master Bath AFTER

The master bathroom area underwent one of the most dramatic changes in the renovation.  The tiered garden tub was taken out and replaced with a beautiful solid white soaking tub.  The shower was also completely re-worked.  The vanity area was made into the client’s ideal space for getting dressed and for packing to travel.  The closet was completely re-designed to house every bit of the client’s wardrobe, including his steamer! All surfaces and fixtures are new, as well as the ottoman.  The fabulous existing collection of art is what really completed this space.

Dining Room BEFORE

Dining Room AFTER

This dining room turned out to be the perfect spot to host an intimate dinner for close friends.  The only thing that stayed the same in this room is the mirrored wall.  Lisa and the client both thought it would be a great way to pay homage to the original 80′s style of the condo.  The custom strie wall finish was done by Virginia Weathersby, our favorite faux painter!  The dining chairs and table base were from a previous home and were perfect for this space.  And the sheer curtains, with a small metallic thread woven through the fabric, really add a nice ambiance when drawn.

Living Room BEFORE

Living Room AFTER

Look at this transformation!  After moving some walls around, tearing out the bookcases, re-doing the mantle and getting all new furniture, this place looks brand new and completely different!  The beautiful Julie Neil fixture in the living area and the custom made foyer fixture light the space beautifully.

Downstairs Bathroom BEFORE

Downstairs Bathroom AFTER

With the custom vanity and custom wall treatment, the powder room off of the Music Room turned out to be a room like no other.

Music Room BEFORE

Music Room AFTER

The Music Room is one of the coziest spaces in the condo.  With the chocolate walls and chocolate drapery, how could this space not feel warm?  Most of the furniture in here is furniture Lisa picked out for the client in years past.  The newly re-worked staircase, which used to only open into the foyer, now opens into this space as well.  The iron railing was custom made to the client’s specifications.  The wall finish, that also continues into the foyer, was a custom wall treatment by Virginia Weathersby.

Guest Room BEFORE

Guest Bedroom AFTER

With a new light fixture, new carpet, new side tables and new lamps, this room turned from boring to bold!  The bedding was from a previous home, but was so easy to work with because of all the color.  The blue lamps were custom made out of vases the client saw in SummerHouse and fell in love with.

Guest Bath BEFORE

What a difference a new paint job, new flooring and new countertops can make! We were so happy with the final result here.

A special thanks to Delta Magazine for featuring this home in their March/April issue and for allowing us to use these photographs.  Didn’t their photographer do a fabulous job?

July 4th is here!

July 4th is here!

We wanted to share one of our favorite summer drink recipes with you, just in case you are looking for something a little different to take along to your Fourth of July cookout!  Make enough to share, and you’re guaranteed to be the most popular one at the party!

The BEST Margarita recipe:
1 can limeade concentrate
1 cup tequila
2 light beers
Lemon-lime soda to taste (about 1 or 2 cups)
1 or 2 limes, sliced

Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher, pour over ice, and enjoy!

This is the perfect drink to help you combat the hot Mississippi weather we’ve been battling!  The lemon-lime soda is what gives this recipe a little extra zing; it is very crisp and refreshing.  There are also lots of ways to vary this recipe to keep it exciting!  You could use zero calorie soda to make it a little lighter, or lime flavored beer to make it extra limey.  One time, we even used orange flavored beer, and cut up oranges instead of limes for a fun twist!  Yum… ENJOY!

New Fabrics That Made Us Fall In Love…

New Fabrics That Made Us Fall In Love…

Just a few days ago, our Schumacher rep, Jim, came in to show us what is new in their world.  We absolutely fell in love with some of their new introductions!  Jim told us that, due to the tough economy, many of their new prints are priced below their normal price point.  So that was good news!  They did a great job of giving us some funky patterns to mix in with some of their more traditional stuff.  And the recoloring of some of their older patterns got us super excited!  Here are the patterns that most captivated us…
